Royal Dornoch Golf Club enjoys a wonderful setting - alongside the seashore
with a white sandy beach separating the golfing links from the Dornoch Firth.
The Dornoch Championship course is classic links golf with the first eight
holes of the course following the natural contours of the old dunes.
It is not enough here to simply keep the ball on the fairway, inviting as they
may look. This is a golf course where thought is required. It is an enjoyable
course for the average player, and offers an interesting challenge for the more
expert golfer. Royal Dornoch might seem a pretty straightforward out-and-back
layout but many of the greens are built on natural raised plateaux so approach
shots need to be played with care.
The par 4 14th, known as 'Foxy' is considered to be the course signature hole
and is actually the only hole on the course not to feature any bunkers.
The raised dome greens which feature on the Dornoch Championship golf course
became one of the trademarks of golf architect Donald Ross. Ross was born in Dornoch in
1872 and was one time professional and 'keeper of the green' at the club. Ross went
on to design many golf courses in the United States, including Pinehurst No. 2.
There is also a second golf course at Royal Dornoch, the Struie, which was
recently extended to offer an alternative quality 18 hole golfing challenge.
The Struie is a par 72 course, measuring 6276 yards and can be a challenging
course on which to play to handicap.
Together, the Struie and the Dornoch championship course, offer a scenic and
challenging day of golf as part of a golfing tour to the north of Scotland.
