Planning a Golf Tour to Scotland
It is almost never to early the begin the planning process for a golfing tour if you
want to play at one of Scotland's most famous golfing venues.
Ten key things you should know about booking times on Scotland's Championship courses
1. Scotland has 5 courses on the current British Open Championship rota:
Carnoustie;
Muirfield;
St Andrews Old course;
Troon;
Turnberry
2. Muirfield, home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and venue for the 2013 British Open Championship,
accepts bookings 15 months prior to play.
3.
The Old course at St Andrews hosts over 40,000 rounds of golf each year.
Advance bookings open at the start of September for play the following year.
4. All championship courses have handicap limits for visitors, ranging from 18 for
men playing at Muirfield to 28 for men at
Carnoustie.
5. The green fees at
Royal Troon during the main season cover one round of golf on
the Old (or championship) course and one round on the Troon Portland course.
6. In 2007,
Carnoustie
became the longest ever British Open course at 7,421 yards.
7. In order to book a round of golf on the
Ailsa course at Turnberry more than two weeks
prior to play you are required to be resident at the Turnberry Hotel.
8. Muirfield only accepts visitors on a Tuesday and Thursday each week.
9.
Royal Troon
only accepts visitors on three days each week, on Mondays,
Tuesdays and Thursdays.
10. For golfers who do not have an advance time booked on the
The Old course at St Andrews, they can enter the daily ballot for times.
Groups of up to 4 golfers submit their names the day before they wish to play and the results of the ballot
are published at 4pm that day. Single golfers are not able to enter the ballot.
